Professional Asbestos Surveys For your Buildings
Are you responsible for a non-domestic building which was built before the year 2000?
If the answer is yes, then you have a legal duty to make sure you are managing the risks posed by asbestos. You must have clear information about where there is asbestos in the building, and you need to develop and implement a clear and comprehensive plan to manage the risks.
Usually, there’s no need to take drastic or expensive action which disrupts the use of your building. It might be just a question of applying a watching brief in a way which is properly planned and recorded. We at LI Roofing can help you every step of the way, taking a common sense and cost-effective approach to making sure you comply with the law and protect the health of all the people who use your building.
It’s easy to understand why asbestos was used so widely in the past. It’s fire resistant, water resistant, durable, and flexible. For much of the 20th century and for centuries before that, it was seen as a kind of wonder-material, used in quantity in floors, roofs, ceilings, partitions, chimneys, pipe lagging and dozens of other applications.
We now know it as a cancer-causing substance linked to deaths and according to figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) released a couple of years ago, in 2017 there were 2,523 deaths from mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the organs caused almost exclusively by the inhalation of asbestos fibres. Since 1999 it has been illegal to use asbestos of any type in the UK.
