The Roof at Wimbledon Centre Court
The Wimbledon Championship now has a roof on centre court. This one-of-a-kind building, created in 2009 by Populous, satisfies its basic specification to be "there but not there," ready to spring into action whenever necessary, while allowing the Championship to continue as an outdoor competition. The roof, now a symbol of The Championship, even has a personal (unofficial) twitter account, which has some interesting tweets from time to time and has a different perspective on the sport of tennis!
2009 saw the completion of Centre Court's retractable roof. Matches may now be played notwithstanding the occasionally iffy weather we see during our British summers thanks to the hydraulically driven folding fabric concertina, measuring 65 by 75 metres.
The roof has been a big subject of conversions in past competitions because of the bad weather and a few high-profile mishaps; The New York Times estimated its cost to the All England Club in 2009 to be around $165 million.
The Centre Court roof and its more recent equivalent on Court No. 1 (which reportedly cost $85 million and inaugurated in 2019) have allowed play to continue, but they may also have contributed to a number of players tripping and getting hurt.
Seven-time champion Serena Williams left the court in tears after aggravating a hamstring problem, while Federer's rival Adrian Mannarino quit from the match after injuring his knee during the final set.
The roof has never been closed on the first day of the competition until 2021, according to Wimbledon's radio station's interview with All England Club chief groundskeeper Neil Stubley on Wednesday.
When the roof is closed, there is a tiny reduction in airflow on the court, according to Stubley, which might have made the ground a little bit slicker than it would have been if the roof were open.
After his first-round encounter, Federer stated that he thought the atmosphere was different when the roof was closed.
